Now, a state legislator has introduced a bill that would establish a system of alerts that could assist the public during such a toxic chemical release. State legislator Rep Eddie Rodriguez and a colleague introduced the bill, HB 1927, that would create a system of mobile alerts to be sent to Texans’ phones. The bill is designed to inform residents and further protect them against any toxic chemicals that threaten human or environmental health.

Under the bill, the mobile alerts system includes an opt-out system, so phone users would be able to choose to not receive alerts. Some agencies currently issue industrial toxic chemical alerts, but no statewide Texas alert system is presently in place.
