A Pasadena refinery faces a lawsuit alleging pollution violations under the Clean Air Act.
Environment Texas and the Sierra Club’s Lone Star chapter filed the suit, claiming repeated and ongoing violations of pollution limits by the refinery operated by Pasadena Refining System Inc (PRSI). PRSI is a subsidiary of Brazil’s national oil company, Petrobras.
In a response, PRSI stated their commitment to complying with local, state and federal regulations.
The environmental groups said they are willing to discuss a settlement with PRSI.
Penalties for Clean Air Act violations can reach into the millions of dollars. The act allows citizens to seek enforcement of pollution rules through federal courts.
A Deer Park refinery reached a $5.8 million settlement in 2009 over alleged violations, and a U.S. District Court judge in Houston is presently weighing penalties to be paid by Exxon Mobile Corp for alleged violations at a Baytown refinery. The two environmental groups brought a suit against that Baytown refinery and chemical plant complex seven years ago.
