Authorities are still unsure what caused the May 5 fire at Deer Park’s Shell plant. Some workers from the Shell plant believe they’re lucky to be alive.
Shell says that gas oil ignited and sent a gigantic dark plume into the air. Employees say they heard a hiss and then saw people running.
After the fire, contaminated liquids went into the Houston Ship Channel, and some residents in the area say they haven’t felt right since.
Neighbors are preparing to file lawsuits against Shell related to the fire and subsequent contamination.
Some employees are preparing to file lawsuits as well.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, and investigators aren’t able to gain access to the site.
