Shane Pellerin Law Firm, PCA man accused of shooting a sheriff’s deputy Friday had spent four months in a mental hospital in 2012 in relation to an aggravated assault case. The man, Shannon Jaruay Miles, was declared incompetent to stand trial in that case.

Miles was arrested Saturday on charges of capital murder as he was accused of shooting Harris County sheriff’s deputy Darren Goforth outside of a gas station.

Miles allegedly put a gun up to Goforth’s head, and after the deputy fell, he fired 15 rounds into his back.

In the 2012 case, Miles was accused of beating up a man at a Salvation Army shelter in Austin. A few months after the assault, Miles was declared incompetent and sent to North Texas State Hospital.

After Friday’s shooting, court records revealed a long history of run-ins with police.
